Suzuki GSX-R1000



The GSX-R1000 is a super bike from Suzuki's GSX-R series of motorcycles. It was introduced in 2001 to replace the GSX-R1100 and is powered by a liquid-cooled 999 cc (61.0 cu in) inline four-cylinder 4-stroke engine.
In 2006, Suzuki revealed a significantly updated GSX-R1000 for 2007 at the Paris motor show. The new bike gained 14 lb (6.4 kg) over the 2006 model which was due to its new exhaust system and new emissions regulations. To counter this significant weight increase, Suzuki claimed improved aerodynamics. Although not a completely new model, the engine and chassis have been updated. It also featured three different engine mapping configurations, selectable via a three-position handlebar switch; standard, sport, and 'wet'. Pricing has been quoted at US$11,399.The 2007 model carried over to 2008 without any significant improvements. MSRP increased to US$11,499.

Bimota's DB7 Oronero: a sportsbike symphony in carbon fiber

In its past reincarnation, Italian motorcycle company Bimota built a reputation around its ability to take the great Japanese and Italian engines of the time and put them into a chassis package that would actually handle - but when the brand relaunched in 2003, many wondered what relevance Bimota would have in an era when the vast majority of modern sportsbikes handle brilliantly straight out of the crate. But it seems there's still room at the top end of the market for bespoke chassis designers, which is a good thing because otherwise we'd never see revolutionary designs like the center-hub steered TESI 3D or the magnificent DB7 Oronero, which boasts one of the first all-carbon fiber frame, subframe and swingarm packages ever to grace a production bike. A truly pornographic piece of motorcycle art, the Oronero also promises breathtaking performance with a weight of just 164 kilograms being propelled by the 164-horsepower Ducati 1098 powerplant.
While carbon fiber bodywork might be reasonably common on top-end motorcycles, it takes a true bespoke company like Bimota to take the material through to its logical conclusions. Inspired by Forumla One and military aircraft chassis design, Bimota crafted the Oronero's frame and swingarm to share the original DB7's geometry while saving weight and allowing much more precise frame stress control. The seat and tail unit is entirely carbon fiber, and supports itself without a subframe. The fairings, clutch cover and even the tank are also carbon - the rearsets, shock and exhaust provide accents of billet aluminum and titanium to add some flash to the otherwise brutal and stealthy look.
The digital dash is one of the most advanced computers ever mounted on a production sportsbike, and it features inbuilt GPS and datalogging - the GPS can recognize a racetrack that you're riding on, automatically record laptimes and record your sessions for later visual playback and analysis.
The hammering 164-horsepower Ducati 1098 engine rattles up a storm in neutral thanks to a semi-exposed dry clutch. It's re-tuned for more midrange in the DB7 than it made in the 1098, but that was hardly necessary; the 1098 happily lifted the front wheel in third gear with no such additional grunt. With all the weight savings the Oronero makes through its use of carbon fiber, the bike ends up with a hair-raising 1:1 horsepower to weight ratio.

Heavy Bikes On Roads

"We plan to get in a series of models from our line-up," Nick Bloor, whose family owns the Triumph brand, said.
Bloor, the export manager for the company, said Triumph was negotiating with seven to eight firms in India, that includes Bajaj Auto and a lifestyle product maker.
" to formulate a strategy for getting into India and are confident to find a partner by the middle of this year," he said.
The models that the company is planning to launch includes 2300-cc 'Rocket III Touring' cruiser, covered in chrome and infused with Triumph's original and authentic styling.
Urban sports bikes like the 675-cc 'Street Triple' and the amazing 'Daytona 675', that won the Best Supersport in both the Supertest and Masterbike 2007 track tests in Spain, could also come in.
However, with import duty, price could be a deterrent. The Rocket III, the company's flagship product, costs around 12,000 pounds in the UK and would cost you well over Rs 18 lakh after a duty of about 110%

"These products cater to a different and niche segment and we come here with an eye on the future. We feel it is an exciting market with fantastic growth potential," Bloor said.

Modern classics like the 865-cc 'Bonneville' and a deluxe version of the sixties icon, the 'Bonneville T100' could also come in.
"Powered by air-cooled parallel twins, their performance, brakes and fuel injection are tuned to current times, even though they are classic,"

IMME 1200 BMW Boxer Sport Bike Pictures And Review

Two students at the International School of Design, Nicolas Bubar (24) and Yves Dufeutrelle (22), thought a BMW Boxer basedSPORTSBIKES would be a good idea and they set to work designing one. They designed a tube frame around a BMW 1200 boxer engine, with a new head and exhaust that brings output to 150 horsepower. In a 341 pound bike, performance should be quite acceptable. Though the fairing shrouds the opposed cylinders, air is directed in the front of the fairing in such a way that cooling air flows over the cylinders and both out the back and sides.
Front suspension is telelever and paralever rear with shaft drive. According to their description, the bike is designed to be personally fitted to each customer. You go to the dealer for a fitting, after which they produce an upper triple clamp and pedal mounts just for you. Other settings are adjustable.
Mirrors, headlights and License palate are easy to remove with the specially made key so track day setup is just minutes away from the street configuration.
Though everything you see here is a computer image, they have started on the road to building the bike through a partnership with a couple of BMW dealers and a design firm.
I love seeing work like this and I'll be looking forward to seeing the finished bike. Great work guys!

The evolution of the Shiver project has no limits. 2010 Honda CBR600RR C-ABS Photos And Review


For years, motorcycle riders have typically preferred to trust their own skill to electronic input at the controls, and so the usefulness of anti-lock and linked braking has been debated again and again. Although many riders have come to acknowledge the value of ABS in the touring and cruiser segments, the pulsating modulation and extra weight have seemingly been unwavering barriers to adoption for high performance sport bike riding.
So, when Takeo Fukui, the President and CEO of Honda, declared a few years ago that all Honda motorcycles above 250cc would have ABS brakes as an option by 2010, many in the sport bike segment were left wondering what might result.
Enter Honda's new Combined ABS system (C-ABS) braking system, now available on both the 2010 Honda CBR600RR and The 2010 Honda CBR1000RR sportbikes. Although the C-ABS adds close to 20 pounds, significantly, none of it is unsprung weight, enabling Honda to disguise the extra poundage within the central mass of the motorcycle. The relative simplicity also negates the need for the pressure control valves, parallel brake lines, or additional master cylinders that cluttered previous generations. This is not a reworked version of the linked ABS found on the Honda ST1300 or Interceptor, but a completely new, fully computerized system that is smarter, faster, and tuned specifically for aggressive sport riding.
Traditional ABS uses sensors and an electronic control module (ECM) to monitor for unusually rapid wheel deceleration-indicating that a wheel is about to lock and lose traction. The instant it is detected, the ECM closes the control valves, allows the fluid pressure to drop, and for a split second, caliper pressure is reduced. But within milliseconds, the ECM then reopens the valve and another attempt at stopping the wheel occurs. As this process repeats itself, the rider feels the familiar-yet-disconcerting pulsing at the braking controls that is so unnerving.
Honda's new C-ABS system is operated traditionally-until either brake is applied aggressively. Once a pre-determined fluid pressure point is reached, the C-ABS electronics take over completely, and both brakes become a fly-by-wire system that uses the rider's input only as a guide.
The ECM monitors wheel speed via sensors, and if either tire is about to skid, it precisely and smoothly modulates the hydraulic pressure to the calipers via high-speed servo-driven ball screws operating against tiny pistons. Simultaneously, fluid is also routed through a "stroke simulator" (a two-piece rubber-like cushion) that creates resistance and, therefore, feel at the controls. Although the Honda C-ABS is pumping in a similar way to a traditional system (albeit much faster), because the rider is insulated from the brakes by the stroke simulator, the job is completely transparent with no pulsing at the controls whatsoever.
However, the front and rear brakes on Honda's C-ABS are not merely linked-they are intelligently integrated together by the ECM. If the handlebar lever alone is squeezed hard, the ECU senses it, takes over, and simultaneously applies a degree of rear wheel braking before adding more stopping force at the front.
Because the rear braking occurs after the initial demand, but milliseconds before any additional front brake is applied, the rear suspension compresses in a controllable way. That minimizes front dive, stabilizes the chassis, and rapidly slows the bike in a settled, neutral attitude. It's as if you have suddenly become a flawless braker; no matter the situation, you are able to modulate both front and rear brakes to perfection.
Likewise, if the rear brake pedal is used alone (such as trail braking into a corner), the ECM does not engage the front brake until the rear wheel is near the point of lockup, and this allows a rider to use the rear brake much like a non-combined braking system.
While the C-ABS cannot be manually disabled, if the computer detects a problem, the fail-safe system simply defaults the machine to non-ABS brakes. A bit skeptical of a computer doing the thinking for me, I gassed up the Honda CBR1000RR and headed for a canyon road to experience the new C-ABS in real world conditions, outside of the friendly confines of the racetrack. Canyon roads are notorious for sand, gravel, and mossy water tracks flowing across them-a perfect test scenario.
Checking to ensure there were no vehicles behind me, I braked as quickly and as hard as I could-and the CBR executed a perfect, pulsation-free panic stop. Wow! Other than a slight numbness noticeable at the brake lever, the Honda had me convinced that I had been completely unassisted. Even when literally stamping on the brake pedal as hard as I could-at speed-the result was serious slowing without either wheel locking up or pulsing against my foot.
And so it went on-regardless of the traction-losing obstacles I threw at it, the stellar braking and handling performance was repeated over and again. As technology continues to advance our sport at the highest levels, we can either choose to embrace it or ignore it. Not only does Honda's C-ABS result in a much safer road riding experience, but it also allows for a much more confidence-inspiring ride in the real world. The debate may continue to rage on, but the revolutionary braking system on the Honda CBR1000RR C-ABS has made me a believer.

Top 10 Motorcycles for New Riders: 2010

A couple weeks ago we posted our thoughts on the 2010 Calgary Motorcycle Show (check out part one, and part two).  As a sort of spiritual follow up, we’ve decided to post a list of the best motorcycles for new riders.  We’ve broken down ten bikes into three categories based on a myriad of factors (size/weight, speed/power, learning curve, and price).  If you’re not really sure what we consider a beginner motorcycle, we break it down into the categories above:
  • Size and Weight - The bigger and heavier a motorcycle is, the harder it will be initially to control.  However, a heavier motorcycle does have it’s advantages (namely, it is more stable when cruising on the highway).  Lighter motorcycles can be “flicked” around easier, giving a new rider that lean-in confidence that is crucial for safe riding.
  • Speed and Power - A 10-second motorcycle isn’t a beginner motorcycle.  It doesn’t matter how you try to justify it.  If your new motorcycle has 100+ horsepower, can fly through the quarter mile in 12 seconds or less, and can pop wheelies at will, it’s not a beginner motorcycle.  But, this doesn’t mean a beginner motorcycle is slow: a Kawasaki Ninja 650R or Suzuki SV650 will both nail a quarter mile in the high 11-second range.  They both also have very predictable, controllable power bands and handling dynamics. Even a Kawasaki Ninja 500R will do the quarter mile in and around the 12.8 second range- compare that to a $50,000 sports car!  What’s important is that a beginner-friendly motorcycle easily allows the rider to control the speed while they are learning and honing their skills.
  • Learning Curve - This one is simple.  How hard is the motorcycle to get on and ride?  Does a quick twitch of the throttle result in a wheelie?  Does the bike “forgive” minor mistakes?
  • Price - We looks at price vs. value here, not just the bottom line.  How much motorcycle is a new rider getting for their buck?

Best Street and Sport Bikes for New Riders

1) Kawasaki Ninja 650R OR Suzuki SV650S

What’s this?  A TIE?  Correct.  Both motorcycles are the best “first big bikes” out there.  Their v-twin/parallel-twin power-plants are responsive, controllable, and a lot of fun to wind out once you’re comfortable with the bike.  Packing around 75 horsepower, these motorcycles are far from slow.  In fact, they are favored by experienced riders for predictable handling and comfortable riding dynamics.
We fell in love with the Kawasaki Ninja 650R after spending some time with it on the highway.  Smooth, comfortable, and strongly positioned on the road.  We felt confident when we rode it, and that confidence allowed us to have a really good time with it.

The Suzuki SV650 has a bit of a cult following for that very reason: they can walk all over 600cc super-sport bikes on the track thanks do the riders ability to confidently predict where and when to lay down power.  Make no mistake: the fuel-injected engines that power these two machines are very capable.  A new rider will have to take some time to get comfortable with them, but once you’ve given the motorcycle its due, be prepared for a wild ride.
Both the Ninja 650R and SV650 have been around for a while, giving you a good assortment to dig through when shopping.  Above all else, make sure you look for a bike that has been maintained and taken care of.  These bikes, while not requiring religious maintenance schedules, need to be maintained like anything else.  Find that hidden gem, however, and you’re in for a real treat!
2) Kawasaki Ninja 500R

Our favorite 500cc motorcycle, this “little” Ninja is a real treat to ride regardless of how experienced a rider you are.  Lightweight, economical, and a blast to flog around through the twisties, the Ninja 500R will reward new riders who are willing to test its limits with a machine that can hang with some of the best through the corners, cost next to nothing to insure, and get excellent fuel economy.  Being dirt cheap is simply a bonus.
If you checked out Craigslist or Kijiji you’d probably find at least a dozen acceptable examples of the Ninja 500R for sale for a pittance.  They haven’t changed the basic design of the bike in over 20 years, so if you find one that’s been taken care of, jump on it!
3) Suzuki GS500F

The Ninja is slightly faster, but that doesn’t mean that this capable Suzuki should be forgotten about.  It will get up and ride should that be the bidding of its owner, and it will reward a new rider with a stable, forgiving machine that can still take a beating.  Feel like doing some heavy lean-in while cornering?  Go to town- this Suzuki LOVES it.  Flick the throttle, hit 60mph in about 4 seconds, and laugh as you $4,000 motorcycle leaves $40,000 sports cars in the dust.
Like the Ninja, the GS500F has been around since 1994 and hasn’t changed too much since its inception.  Find one that has been taken care of and you’ll have a great time!
4) Yamaha FZ6R

We love the FZ6R.  It’s entry to the market last year proved it to be a very capable machine, worthy of respect from any rider.  Let’s face the facts here: it’s a *fantastic* looking motorcycle; it has an upright, comfortable seating position; it uses a detuned engine from the last generation of the venerable R6; it can be whisper-quiet or scream like a raving banshee.
So, why isn’t it higher on our list?  Simple: being a new entry to the market, it’s relatively unproven.  Plus, while it is truly a magnificent machine, the Ninja 650R/SV650 have both proven themselves time and time again as “new rider friendly”.  But, if your heart is set on the Yamaha FZ6R, don’t even think twice about it- buy it, ride it, love it.

Best Dual-Sport and Motards for New Riders

1) Yamaha TW200
2009-yamaha-tw200Despite having a five-speed transmission (where both the Suzuki DR200SE and the Honda CRF230M have six-speeds), the Yamaha TW200 is sitting here as our most recommended dual-sport for the 2010 year.  It’s not particularly pretty (is any dual-sport really all that pretty?), and it’s not what we’d call fast (it does have a whopping 16 horsepower though), and it doesn’t do anything any better than any of the other dual-sports.  So why is it number one for us?
If there’s one word that more people need to incorporate into their daily lives, it’s balance.  The TW200 is just that: a well balanced motorcycle that enables its rider to hit the trails, cruise the city streets, and do so in nearly any combination.  Tire choices not withstanding (dirt-tire “knobbies” aren’t exactly confidence inspiring on city roads), the TW200 is the Honda Civic of the dual-sport world: it does everything asked of it in a competent and capable manner.  Just don’t ask it to hit anything over 70mph.
2) Honda CRF230M
hondacrf230m9If you want all the advantages of owning a dual-sport (being able to hit the trails and the highway, for example), but also want the ability to cruise gingerly, the Honda CRF230M is a great machine.  It’s got clean lines, great looks, and is backed by Honda’s legendary reliability.  We would have rated it higher on this list (which, lets face it, is the end all be all list of 2010…. ha), but the CRF230M doesn’t feel as stable on the trials as some of the other dual-sports we’ve ridden.
The CRF230M is lightweight – 276lbs – and severely underpowered (unless you think 14 horsepower is the bees nees), but that doesn’t change the fact that it does its job effectively.  It’s six-speed is geared a little short, giving this Honda a little more “oomph” then you’d expect from it’s little power plant.
The single biggest quality this bike has going for it, however, is its fuel economy.   Honda claims near 90mpg, and multiple sources have done testing to validate Honda’s claims.  90mpg?  Maybe not, but it routinely gets pretty darn close.
3) Suzuki DR200SE
2009_suzuki_dr_200seIf someone used the word “intimidating” to describe the Suzuki DR200SE we’d probably have to give them a blank stare and check their forehead for a fever.  With an appearance striking similar to your typical dirt bike, the Suzuki DR200SE is the polar opposite of intimidating.  It’s small, light weight, with a low seat height and none of the fancy (expensive) gimmicks that some of its brethren share.  It runs like a top and will likely never give you any kind of problem.
This Suzuki shines off-road, where the ground is anything but asphalt.  Dirt, sand, mud, creek bed, gravel?  No problem.  The DR200SE eats it up!
We’d have rated this motorcycle higher, but with a top speed of around 60mph, it’s fairly limited in terms of both the distance it’s able to travel as well as its on-road practicality.  Not that it can’t be done, per say… it’s just that there are bikes out there that do it a little better.  Ultimately, it’s small size and inviting posture are the reasons it’s ranked here.  Anyone, regardless of age, size, or comfort level with motorcycles, can hop on a DR200SE and have a blast.  Isn’t that what dual-sports are supposed to be all about?

Best Cruisers for New Riders

1) Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Custom

Do you want a cruiser that looks good, sounds great, has plenty of get up and go, but isn’t so heavy that it will nearly kill you the first time you take it into a sharp corner?  The Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Custom may be the bike for you.  It’s a “big bike” that’s not really a “big bike”.  Does that make sense?
The last time we rode a Vulcan 900 Custom, it was a 2009 model.  It had all the qualities of a cruiser that we wanted to see (size, sound, comfort, ease of use, etc.), but it didn’t have neither the intimidating price tag nor the intimidating heavy weight.  The very first time we rode it we felt comfortable leaning it into corners, testing the brake limits, and found ourselves thoroughly enjoying the bike overall.
Is it the best cruiser out there?  Maybe not, but it sure is a real treat for a new rider.
2) Honda VT750C Spirit

If starting at 900cc seems a bit daunting, this 749cc Honda may fit the bill.  Like the Vulcan, you get the image and sound of a “big bike” without the heavy weight or price tag to go with it.  This makes it ideal for a first bike, as it’s a bit more forgiving than a larger motorcycle.
Everything from the chrome pipes to the wire spoked wheels lend to the impressive imagine this Honda portrays, and it’s ultra-low seat height make it ideal for shorter riders.  All in all, for under $9,000 CDN / $8,250 USD you can have a brand new, capable, fun motorcycle that looks and sounds great.
Like the Vulcan, the VT750C Spirit may not be the best cruiser on the street, but for a new rider, it’s a very fun and exciting one.  If the Vulcan’s too big, but something like a Suzuki GZ250 Marauder is too small, this Honda should fit the bill nicely.
3) Suzuki GZ250 Marauder

At 250cc, the Suzuki GZ250 Marauder sure won’t be winning any races, but that’s not where the appeal of this motorcycle lies.  This motorcycle is perfect for a new rider who wants a comfortable seating position, but doesn’t want the power, weight, or price of a larger motorcycle.  In that sense, the Marauder is a great machine- especially when you consider what it does and how much it asks in return to do it.
It’s small and low to the ground, making it easy for just about anyone to ride it.  It won’t launch the front tire high into the air, and mashing the throttle won’t send you flailing off the back.  It’s forgiving, it’s adaptable, but more importantly, it’s approachable.
