Samsung's Laptop with an Amazing Transparent OLED Screen

Samsung fulfilled its promises to reveal more of its transparent OLED screens during CES this year. Not only did they debut the Ice Touch, a PMP with a small transparent screen, they demonstrated a really awesome project still in R&D. An unnamed 14 inch screen was attached to a laptop, showcasing a 100,000 to 1 contrast ration, 40% transparency, and a passable 960 x 540 resolution. Some have already dubbed it the ‘Avatar display’ due to its resemblance to the technology from the movie. Any way you look at it, the new 14 inch transparent screen is a remarkable device and represents a cool looking step towards integrating displays seamlessly into our environments. Of course, a 960 x 540 resolution is a little archaic for a laptop in 2010, but I’m not really disappointed. The 40% transparency when the screen is off is cool enough to override other considerations. Clearly, with the device unnamed we’re not going to be seeing this thing hit the markets any time soon. Samsung wasn’t even clear if the screen would always be integrated with a laptop. Still, if the Ice Touch PMP is any indication, Samsung is willing to explore the full range of sizes and markets for their OLED technology. Hopefully they’ll find the right niche for really cool transparent screens. Augmented reality tablet computers? Something will work out. And when it does, it’s going to look incredible.

Toshiba Satellite M645-S4055 – Good overall package but low battery life

Toshiba might confuse you with the way they name their laptops but these notebooks are really cool. One such example is Toshiba Satellite M645-S4055 which costs $1,050. When a notebook goes past the $1,000 mark I expect some high end features because laptops are getting really cheap these days.
For this price, you get an Nvidia Optimus graphics, 500 GB hard drive, 4 GB RAM, and a Core i5 processor. The graphic card is really fast and I would recommend this if you are a looking for a mid range gaming laptop. The performance will certainly not satisfy hard core gamers, however. But I was disappointed to see that this laptop doesn’t have Wireless display or Blu-ray optical drive for this price point. Toshiba Satellite M645-S4055 does have a slot loading DVD writer and the 14 inch display too is pretty bright. The Harmon Kardon speakers on this laptop have superb sound quality. Such excellent sounding speakers are quite rare in laptops. Mostly, laptop speakers have tinny speakers which give awful sound quality. Check out this laptop if you are going to listen to a lot of music. I was impressed by the simulated surround sound.
The battery life of the Toshiba Satellite M645-S4055 is also disappointing. This laptop gave me just two hours of battery juice in my lab tests which is really low for a notebook armed with Optimus technology. The manufacturer is offering extended life batteries separately but they should have given it with the laptop itself since it has a relatively high price.


Toshiba Satellite M645-S4055, on the bright side, has a good assortment of ports. There is an eSATA/USB combo port, VGA port, SD card slot, amongst others. The combo port powers your gadgets when the laptop is turned off or is in sleep mode. It is called sleep-and-charge port and is quite ubiquitous in Toshiba laptops.
The one unique offering on the Toshiba Satellite M645-S4055 is the sleep-and-music mode which lets you use the laptop speakers for listening to music on your iPod even when the notebook is switched off. This is quite interesting and you will certainly love this feature especially with the sound quality that these speakers have to offer.
The good display, fast graphic card and excellent speaker quality makes the Toshiba Satellite M645-S4055 ideal for home entertainment use. Nvidia GeForce GT 330M graphics impressed me in gaming performance. I played some new and old games; this gaming card could take them all easily. I had to tone down the details a bit but you have to do that on most mid range gaming laptops. This is far from a hard core gaming beast but it can certainly play a lot of titles with ease.
Finally, I would say that this is a great 14 inch laptops but the short battery life might be a deal breaker especially for people who travel a lot. But if you are looking for a smaller desktop replacement laptop to watch movies and listen to music, the Toshiba Satellite M645-S4055 can be considered.

Samsung N230 Netbook now shipping

Samsung's latest netbook, the N230, has just begun shipping. The 10.1" netbook will include USB 3.0 and over 13 hours of battery life, among other features.

The Samsung N230 will be available with either Intel's Atom N450 or Atom N470 CPU. It will be very lightweight at under 1kg, and thin as well at under 1". Battery life will also be geared towards portability, with 7 hours available via the standard battery and just under 14 available with extended options. The 10.1" 1024x600 is LED backlit and anti-reflective. Connectivity options will include USB 3.0, Bluetooth 3.0, and 802.11bgn.

Fujitsu LifeBook PH520 released

Fujitsu's latest ultraportable business notebook has just been released in the PH520. The 11.6" notebook will feature AMD processors and some pretty powerful hardware for a notebook so small.

The 11.6" display will be LED backlit and have a 1366x768 resolution. It will weigh just 3.08 lbs and manages about five and a half hours of runtime on the standard 6-cell battery. It will offer Bluetooth, 802.11n and both VGA and HDMI.

There will be an AMD Athlon II Neo K125 1.7GHz CPU powering the notebook in conjunction with ATI Radeon HD 4225 integrated graphics. Up to 8GB DDR3 RAM and 320GB of storage are available, as is an external USB optical drive. The notebook will run Windows 7 Professional.

Pricing starts at $599, and it is available today.

Acer Crams a Core i7 Into its New TimelineX Ultraportable

It's only been a few short months since Acer revealed its sleek, ultraportable Aspire TimelineX series, but the series is already getting an update. Acer just announced that it has updated the series, with a couple of new models and configurations.
A new model shines in the 1830T line--the 1830T-68U118, which features an Intel Core i7 680UM processor (1.46GHz with Turbo Boost technology), and 11.6-inch display, and a (supposed) 8 hours of battery life. The new model also lives up to its ultraportable classification, weighing in at just 3.09 lbs. This new ultra-light notebook has a suggested price of $899.
Acer updated the other TimelineX models as well: New features include HDMI output ports, Intel Core i3, i5, and i7 processors, full-sized keyboards (including the 11.6-incher), and Windows Home Premium. A couple of the 14-inch notebooks even have discrete graphics.
If you're looking for something a little closer to notebook instead of netbook, Acer is updating its 3820T line--13.3-inch screens, 3.97 pounds, and just over an inch (1.14 inches) thick. The 3820T line features Intel Core i3 or i5 processors, 4GB of RAM (upgradeable to 8GB), and up to a 320GB hard drive.
The Aspire 5820T (15.6-inch screens, 5.5 lbs) and 4820T (14-inch screens, 4.65 lbs) have been updated to include Intel Core i3 or i5 processors, up to 4GB of RAM (upgradeable to 8GB), and hard drives up to 500GB in capacity. Both lines will set you back $700+.
Also--for gamers--a couple of the 14-inch (4820TG) models now have discrete switchable graphics in an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 graphics card. These models, which feature an Intel Core i5-460M processor, have a suggested retail price starting at $799.
While we're a bit skeptical about the "8-hour battery life" claim on all of these models, an 11.6-incher with a full-size keyboard and an i7 processor is certainly tempting.
The new configurations will be available in retail stores on Monday.

MacBook Air Update Reported

Apple is planning a refresh of the long neglected MacBook Air according to Far East reports.
DigiTimes, a news source dedicated to Asia's IT industry, claims Quanta Computer has won a contract to supply Apple with a new, smaller MacBook Air.
MacBook Air"Quanta has reportedly landed orders for 11.6-inch MacBooks from Apple. Shipments of 11.6-inch MacBooks are expected to top 400,000 to 500,000 units in 2010. But Quanta declined to comment on issues concerning clients or orders," reports DigiTimes.
The MacBook Air currently comes with a 13.3-inch diagonal LED-backlit glossy widescreen display.
DigiTimes added Quanta, a Taiwan-based manufacturer of notebook computers, is expected to ship a total of 13 to 13.2 million notebooks in the third quarter down 3 to 5 per cent from 13.7 million units shipped in the second quarter.
Reporting the rumours, several sources suggest Apple's new smaller MacBook Air could bridge the gap between the iPad and the MacBook.
The rumours of a new MacBook Air "ready to launch," have been doing the rounds for some time. Back in July, DigiTimes claimed Apple had plans for a MacBook Air with 11.6-inch display, running the Intel Core i-series of processors in the second half of 2010. The same report suggested the new iPod touch would come with a 3-megapixel camera, capable of both photo and video recording.
Apple currently sells the MacBook Air with Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 1.86GHz frontside bus, 2GB Memory, 120 GB SATA hard drive and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics for £1174 (US$1857) A 2.13GHz MacBook Air, with 128 GB solid-state drive, costs £1378 (US$2180).

Dell Inspiron M301z Packs AMD Dual-Core Neo Processor

For Dell, the Inspiron M301z is the first laptop to come with the AMD Dual-Core Neo processor that promises extraordinary speed and performance. For the meantime, you cannot find this notebook on Dell’s official site although Dell Singapore has been very vocal about this notebook’s release.

Micro Star International (MSI), on Monday unveiled its new laptop in F-series line-up for the Indian market.

 

"MSI worked in close collaboration with internationally renowned sound system experts from Dynaudio and THX to design the F-Series notebooks so that they would be both powerful and offer amazing sound," MSI India's Managing Director, Tony Yang said during the launch.

 

The F-series line-up includes FX400, FX600 and FR600. The model comes at prices ranging from Rs. 37,000 to Rs. 53,000 depending upon the configuration. The new models, with 14 to 17 inches wide screen, has Wi-Di (Wireless Display) that can be used for sharing laptop content with the HDTV wirelessly.

 

Other specifications of the laptop include intel core i5 processor, intel turbo boost and intel hyper-threading technologies.

 

"We hope the young mass in the country will accept our F-Series," Yang said.

 

MSI is a large international technology firm with its product portfolio including manufacturing mainboards, notebooks, PCs, graphics cards, consumer electronics and car infotainment products among other products.
